The drive from Toronto to Florida is LONG! I don’t know how people do it in two days. I can tell you I will never dead head it down to Florida again until my husband gets his driving license. I have to say that the kids were wonderful on the trip. Our son, on occasion, would chant “I want out”. But this was not as often as I expected. I, on the other hand, was the biggest baby of them all… I would ask ” how much longer?” on an hourly basis. After half way through the second day I was done with driving! If I had it to do again I would have done it in 4 days so we could have stopped along the way, got out and stretched our legs.
The only thing that made our trip bearable was the awesome new car from GM. We have the use of a brand new Equinox that came fully loaded with two TV screens in the back and XM radio. The XM radio has saved my sanity on this trip. We’ve been listening to different pod casts and comedy shows. The kids have enjoyed the entertainment system as have their parents 😉
After driving on the second day for eight long hours I was looking forward to a nice glass of wine at dinner. We got to the restaurant, were seated in the booth and the server came over to take our order… I said, “I would love a glass of pinot noir” and the waiter’s response, “sorry, you are in a dry country, no alcohol on Sunday” nooooooooooo! was what rang through my head. I’m not a big drinker but I do enjoy a glass of wine from time to time, especially after a long, grueling road trip. But that was okay because I knew I could relax in the hot tub after dinner. I was looking forward to sitting in the hot tub and letting it work out all the stress in my muscles from being behind the wheel all day long. We quickly ate our meal, paid the bill, went back to the hotel to change into our swimsuits and enjoy the relaxing hot tub. We walked down to the pool area only to come upon a sign that stated in big bold letters “Hot Tub out of Order” noooooooooo! was what shouted from my mouth. Oh yes, this time I did not hold my composure. Talk about adding insult to injury! All I wanted was a glass of wine and a relaxing soak in the hot tube after my long, grueling drive.
After a third long day of driving we finally reached our first stop on our road trip. We made it! No more driving for three days! Just fun in the sun, swimming, eating and relaxing oh ya!
We reached Clearwater Beach late Monday night and checked into our room at the Sheppard’s Beach Resort. It’s a great hotel and we are pleased with our room. The two queen beds are very comfortable. There is a nice couch and a mini kitchen in the room. We have a view of the beach from our balcony and we are on a high floor away from the loud band playing at the tiki bar.
We spent the day swimming in the pool and collecting shells at the beach. The hotel pool is clean and refreshing. The lounge chairs are nice and have comfortable cushions on them. My only complaint is the lack of umbrellas. It gets hot during the day and with next to no shade there is little relief to be had. Luckily the pool area wasn’t too busy and we’ve ran into nice people who are more than happy to share their shade with us. I don’t think I’d like to stay here on the weekend because I get the idea it is a bit of a party place with 20 somethings coming in to party and have fun. However, this is an ideal place for us to enjoy the first leg of our family vacation. The staff is very friendly, the food is good and there is a nice selection of both adult and kid fruity slushy drinks. We finally feel like we are on vacation! I’m off now to listen to the band play Sweet Home Alabama and Brown Eyed Girl.
